We often get caught up in luxurious finishes and features of a home, but when we strip it right down to the bare bones of a design – what makes the cut?
As a first homebuyer, it's a question that gets me thinking about the most important elements of a house and every time versatility tops the list.
When I think about a versatile home, I think about a design that will suit my needs as a first homebuyer – but could easily transform into a share house, a family home or even a holiday home as years go by.

It sounds like a lot to ask from a design, but I was surprised to find exactly that when visiting Rivergum Homes' Parafield Gardens display village.
Approaching the Laura display, I found myself preparing for a quaint and simple home – with the classic cladded facade reminding me of childhood holidays – but was pleasantly surprised when I opened the front door to see an interior that packed a punch.
The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home offers a contemporary decor, with an attention to detail you would often see in high-end builds. If that's not enough, it also includes 130.93sqm of living area and sits 19.2m wide and 6.9m deep.
Rivergum Homes' design director John Eckert says the design is also fully transportable, another tick in the box for versatility.
"The Laura design is one of over ten designs specifically intended to be an efficient and affordable transportable home," he says.
"Transportable homes can be delivered to an address ready to be positioned, connected to utilities and ready to move into within a couple of days.
"Built from lightweight, environmentally-friendly materials, these homes are built to be versatile and easily transported."
Although display homes are often shown with plenty of added specifications, John says the Laura is shown largely with a standard spec – priced from $95,700.
"The specification is based on our standard spec with some cost-effective upgrades," he says.
"The affordable, simple and practical nature of the home appeals to buyers of all ages and ends of the housing market.
"Whether it be a holiday home or a country residence, we see families and regional buyers interested in the Laura as a practical and smart floorplan."
Even as a first homebuyer, I could see the appeal of the design and could easily imagine myself comfortably living and enjoying what was on offer.
Walking into the entry foyer, a timber partition provides a glimpse of the dining area, before you're drawn into the main living and entertaining area of the home.
As I wandered around the living and meals spaces, I found myself genuinely impressed by the use of an olive green feature wall and subtle geometric wallpaper to perfectly balance the light-filled space – creating an opulent and moody feel.
"(The interior) was inspired by taking a very popular colour scheme with our customers and giving it a warm, eclectic look," John says.
"We have kept the joinery, main paint colour and floor finishes quite natural with whites and charcoals, but added a sense of fun and movement in the way the home has been furnished."
Which can be seen in it's finest form in my favourite part of the design, the master suite. Tucked at the front of the home, it features a delicious olive green feature wall and statement pendant lights – transforming it from a simple room, to a private and stylish haven. If that's not enough, it also features a 'his and hers' walk-in robe and a neat ensuite with a double shower, a vanity and a toilet.
The remaining three bedrooms can be found down the other side of the design, all with trendy colour palettes. Although the Parafield Gardens display shows three additional bedrooms, they could easily be converted into a home office, a nursery or anything your heart desires as the rooms are all welcomingly spacious.
The main bathroom and laundry are located adjacent. The bathroom featuring a bath, a double shower, a separate toilet and a separate vanity – another box ticked. The laundry is also a decent size and has easy access to the backyard, which is always appreciated.
John says the Laura is designed to make the most of an acreage, which makes sense given its 19.2m frontage, however could potentially suit a traditional sized allotment, subject to council planning approval requirements.
"The linear nature of the Laura best suits rural or coastal sites, where flexibility exists for siting to suit views or solar orientation," he says.
"The display home has a modified facade and Rivergum is soon to release an exciting new range of contemporary facade options," John says.
In terms of versatility, Rivergum Homes' Laura design offers everything you could need now and well into the future. The flexible floorplan ensures the home will suit you as a first homebuyer, a professional couple, a family or even right the way through to a downsizer.
